Master of Havana Cigars : Martin Utisil

What do you enjoy most about working with cigars?

There is many things I enjoy about working with cigars. Being part of a great team at Davidoff would be on top of the list, also helping cigar lovers to choose the right cigars for the right occasions and advising new customers on buying and enjoying their first cigar. I just enjoy talking about cigars, learning about cigars and smoking cigars.

What first interested you in cigars?

Visiting Davidoff of London for the first time. I was getting the walk-through and seeing the humidor with all the beautiful cigars. Got hooked ever since.

Do you remember your first cigar?

Lets mention the first "professionally" smoked one: Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone just starting to smoke cigars?

Time is important, make sure you always have plenty of time to enjoy your cigar. Start with lighter cigars. Make yourself comfortable and enjoy every minute. Get a glass of water to clean your pallet, so you can get the varieties of flavours of that particular cigar, also choose drink to your liking to compliment the cigar.

What are your favourite three cigars?

Tough question: San Cristobal El Principe - shorter lighter smoke but with the wonderful taste the San Cristobal cigars have. Hoyo de Monterrey San Juan - big tasty cigar - amazing in flavour Partagas Serie D No.4 -classic, full strength and always tasty cigar to finish the evening with. Does it really have to be only three cigars?

Has becoming a Master in Havana Cigars helped you in your profession?

Yes it has. I feel more confident talking about the history and origins of Habanos. Describing the ways they are “born” from little seedlings, appreciating how much hard work is needed before they become the relaxing inspiration we see, buy and enjoy. Thank you Hunters & Frankau and Davidoff of London for allowing me to become one of the little parts of The Wonderful World of Habanos.
