What do you enjoy most about working with cigars?

The cigar life style. It means people with good manner, who live in a kind of old-world, where the time goes slowly. We can follow different religions or come from different countries but we enjoy each other’s company, sipping a totally hand-made cigar.

What first interested you in cigars?

The elegance of cutting and lighting a cigar. When I was young, I saw my father preparing his cigar with a profound sense that time and space stop in a blue smoke.

Do you remember your first cigar?

My first cigar was the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2, a gift from Athila Roos, my mentor and Head Sommelier at The Arts Club while I worked there as a commis. Light, elegant cigar, packed of flavor.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone just starting to smoke cigars?

To stay away from fat, big, full bodied Habanos. It would be an exaggeration. A beginner sometimes want to act like a famous actor, but this kind of cigar is like a punch in the face from the famous world heavyweight champion, George Foreman.

What are your favourite three cigars?

My favourite light cigar is Quai D’Orsay Coronas Claro, delicate texture on the palate and vivid aromas. It goes well with Cuban coffee and croissant with red fruit marmalade. One of my best friend, Alberto, is the secretary of “Salami di Varzi” confraternity. When I go at his house, he always prepare panini filled with this special product. My favourite cigar to match with is Sancho Panza Molinos, medium body, savoury and sapid, rich cigar. My perfect cigar after a special dinner is Partagas Presidentes. A well balanced, full strength double figurado, with earth, leather aroma, herbal, peppery notes and with excellent burn. I like to enjoy it with a glass of El Dorado Enmore 1993 Rum.

Has becoming a Master in Havana Cigars helped you in your profession?

Absolutely! Deep knowledge is always useful. I can deliver a best service to my guests. It helps me to suggest cigars for any occasion. Recognized as Master in Havana cigars, I have a great opportunity to introduce a beginner in the beautiful world of Cuban tobacco industry.
