Master of Havana Cigars : Alberto Mendoza

What do you enjoy most about working with cigars?

One of the things that I enjoy the most as a cigar salesman is the possibility of being in contact with people from different parts of the world, and to acquire from them a lot of knowledge about different subjects. I also enjoy knowing the young people that are interested in the Havana cigar world. For me it has been a great pleasure to introduce many of them to the experience of smoking their first Habano.

What first interested you in cigars?

When in 1990, I met the lady who is today my wife, she introduced me to the tobacco business. At the time, I had the opportunity to attend different events related to Havana cigars and appreciate the pleasure that cigar smokers experienced when they smoked a Habano. Sharing this ritual inclined me to be interested in the cigar world.

Do you remember your first cigar?

Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone just starting to smoke cigars?

Smoking a cigar should be an act of pleasure and relaxation. Whether smoking alone or in the company of friends, the cigar should become an element that contributes to spiritual relaxation. To those who have just started smoking cigars, my recommendation is that they always take the necessary time to enjoy the cigar of their choice, and never smoke in a hurry.

What are your favourite three cigars?

Within the Habanos range there are a lot of cigars that I really enjoy, but if I have to chose the top three, I would say: Cohiba Robusto Supremos Partagas Maduro No1 Hoyo de Monterrey, Le Hoyo de San Juan

Has becoming a Master in Havana Cigars helped you in your profession?

Studying for the Master in Havanas exam forced me to go deeper into the knowledge about this product. Although I began working in this sector in 1996 and I have been linked to it for more than 20 years, the in-depth study of the subject allowed me to learn the technical terminology in English and this has helped me to improve my communication with clients. I thank Hunters and Frankau for this initiative that encourages and stimulates those of us in the Havana cigar business to expand our knowledge about this product, which indirectly translates into sale increase.
