Master of Havana Cigars : Alberto Lucchelli

What do you enjoy most about working with cigars?

The smoking time, when my guests start to sip their cigar I can see, how the really like relaxing on the sofa being out of work, no phone, no laptop…just them, the cigar and glass of spirits.

What first interested you in cigars?

When I was a boy, I use to play draughts with my uncle Giorgio after dinner. He likes to smoke a cigar during the game with a glass of Nocino, Italian liqueur. He has a small humidor always full with his favourites brand, Romeo y Julieta.

Do you remember your first cigar?

A few years ago, my friend and colleague Giuseppe Moccia invited me to go in a tobacco shop near our work place, smoking a cigar during our break…it was Habanos, a world completely new to me. I tried Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2, a robusto, light body, slow burning, large volume of smoke fascinated and captured me immediately.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone just starting to smoke cigars?

My advice is to start with light body cigar better with a slender gauge/medium gauge, like Hoyo du Depute, Rafael Gonzalez Petit Corona or San Cristobal de la Habana El Principe. If someone fancy a fat cigar, I could suggest a light body one, no too big, maybe with a same lengths of short robusto.

What are your favourite three cigars?

Depend on time of day. In the morning, during my day off, I really like Hoyo de San Juan, light body, fat, big cigar matched with cappuccino and selection of croissants; reading journal surrounded by the plants of my garden. As aperitif cigar, with a glass of champagne, I fancy Punch Punch Coronas Gordas, its vivacious notes goes well the bubbles. Now, my after dinner favourite cigar is Montecristo Churchills Anejados 2015, with mellow refined taste, without much of the exuberance of youth cigar. I enjoy with red chilli dark chocolate and a glass of sweet wine Chateau D’Yquem, in my hand.

Has becoming a Master in Havana Cigars helped you in your profession?

Of course! Now I am able to help my guests giving more information, sharing my knowledge and making them more confident to find the perfect cigar that suits their taste. through the beautiful world of Habano.
