The Por Larrañaga brand was registered by Ignacio Larrañaga in 1834, making it now one of the oldest cigar brands still in current production and the name in English means “for Larrañaga”. The Spanish word “Sobresaliente” translates into English as “Outstanding”.
Since 2005 companies that distribute Havana cigars in different territories around the world have been invited by Habanos s.a. to bid for the chance to develop their own special sizes in the less well-known Habanos brands which, if successful, will then be made in limited quantities for sale, in numbered boxes, exclusively in their own markets. These cigars are known as Regional Editions and the Por Larrañaga sobresalientes is the 2014 UK Regional Edition.
Commercial Name: Sobresalientes
Factory Name: Sobresalientes
Dimensions: 6” (152mm) x 53 ring gauge
Flavour category: Light to Medium
Production method: Totally handmade using long filler with all leaves sourced from the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba
Presentations: 5,000 numbered SBN boxes of 10 cigars available exclusively in the UK
This particular vitola (size) was first seen in 2007 as the Partagás Sobresaliente in the Replica de Humidor Antiguo. Only 200 humidors containing 50 of these cigars were made. To this day it remains a very rare size and one that cannot be found in any standard production lines.
This cigar represents the third time that Hunters & Frankau have selected Por Larrañaga to produce their Regional Editions but the first time that the Sobresaliente vitola has been presented in the Por Larrañaga brand.
As with the two previous releases (The Magnifico in 2007 and the Regalías de Londres in 2010) the Sobresaliente will be dressed with a special cigar band that has been re-created from a style and design found adorning the brand at the turn of the 20th century.
The brand is classified as light to medium by Habanos s.a. In his iconic book, the “Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars”, Min Ron Nee says “Por Larranaga cigars have an unmistakable caramel sweet taste. This is the hallmark of the brand. They are also subtly aromatic… All models age extremely well.”
The response on the night was overwhelmingly positive, it already displays the refinement, elegance and balance expected from the brand and it is clearly a cigar that is ready to smoke now. However, several guests were also heard to comment favourably on the cigar’s ageing potential. Although naturally to verify this judgement we shall have to wait a while…
