DEADLINE : 2nd October 2026
The future of premium cigars in the UK is under serious threat as the government considers extending plain packaging legislation to all tobacco products, including cigars.
If introduced, plain packaging could force many premium cigars from UK shelves, threatening the survival of specialist retailers and other long-established businesses. Historic brands that have been part of British cigar culture for generations could disappear almost overnight, taking their heritage, craftsmanship and tradition with them.
Premium cigar boxes are not simply decorative. They carry important details that help buyers confirm a cigar’s age, origin and authenticity. Original boxes are also essential for the long-term storage of aged cigars, helping to protect their condition, history and value. Without this packaging, consumers would lose vital information about what they are buying.
Many overseas manufacturers place enormous value on their brands and how they are presented around the world. They may be unwilling to create separate plain packaging solely for the UK. For importers, repackaging hundreds of different products would be neither practical nor commercially viable. As a result, product availability could shrink dramatically, leaving consumers with far less choice and changing the industry for good.
This is far more than just packaging. It is about allowing consumers to make informed decisions and to buy, collect and store cigars with confidence. Removing these protections would reduce transparency and choice, with lasting consequences for the entire industry. That is why everyone who values premium cigars must act before it is too late.
The government consultation closes on 2 October 2026, so please act now.
