I enjoy many things about working with cigars; the beautiful terraces and lounges, the product itself, which is so niche and luxurious, but mostly I enjoy the people I get to meet. The cigar world is filled with people of different cultures, ages, and personalities. Spending time and building friendships with people that you wouldn’t get to meet in any other line of work is incredibly rewarding.
It started purely academically, whilst working as a sommelier I would occasionally be involved with the selling/service of cigars, so I simply wanted to know what I was talking about. From here a personal enjoyment started which has now developed into my career.
It was a Trinidad Reyes, I smoked it by Hampsfell Hospice whilst living in the Lake District, a location where I smoked many of my first cigars.
Take your time, both in the smoking of cigars, and in the exploring of different brands and styles. Cigars are at their best when you dedicate a few moments out of your day to enjoying them.
My go to is a Bolivar Belicosos Finos, a rich and earthy cigar which never disappoints. For a special occasion I would smoke a Trinidad Fundadores, a cigar which has unfortunately been a little hard to find since I first began in cigars. But the best cigar I have ever smoked was an El Rey del Mundo Coronas de Luxe, discontinued in 2006 long before I was smoking cigars, it has aged fantastically, with a great depth of flavour, silky smooth smoke, and a fantastic bouquet.
Most definitely, building knowledge around products that you are passionate about only helps improve your confidence, especially when it is linked to your career as well. I would highly recommend anyone working in cigars to work towards becoming a Master of Havana Cigars.
