Montecristo Number 2

Jimmy McGhee

I have just finished smoking one these this morning and, once again, I am left with the thought that this is simply one of the greatest cigars in current production anywhere in the world. I have smoked them with a bit of age on them and I have smoked them straight off the boat from Cuba and they never disappoint. They burn beautifully, look fantastic and represent everything that I love about Cuban cigars. People talk about the balance of a cigar all the time, but the Monte 2 holds so many complimentary flavours and develops so naturally as you smoke it that 'well balanced' doesn't really do it justice. This is a harmonious cigar...

The flagship of the Montscristo brand also manages to be the standard bearer for the Piramede size and hold its own as one of the great Cuban smokes in the marketplace. Put simply, the Monte 2 is the most iconic cigar in the world today.

10/10.

Jimmy
I love what you have written here, but have to be honest I would choose the Partagas P2 over the Monte these days. It just seems to deliver more flavour.

It might be a bit of a'johnny-come-lately' by your standards but we are all experts of our personal taste.

Nice to finally see some reviews going up here.

I've always loved the Monte 2 as well Jimmy, and i agree with your review.

Has the Edmundo improved a lot in the last year or so, I hear that the early ones lacked a lot of punch, but the newer releases were better. Would you rather buy a box of Monte 2's or recent release Edmundo's?

Cheers Charlie

Hi Al,

The P2 is a cracking smoke and right up there, but the monti 2 is a cigar to which I always seem to return. I don't think this has anything to do with how long they have been on the market as I have smoked some fresh Monti 2s and enjoyed them hugely. It is just a cigar that resonates with me personally.

Charlie, in answer to your question, I would always go for the Monti 2. That's not to say the Edmundo isn't a great smoke (I like the Petit Edmundo just as much), but the No2 holds a very special place in my heart and will take some shifting.

Can I assume you would rather go for the Edmundo?

Jimmy,
I have never had an Edmundo before but have enjoyed many Petit Edmundo's. I was always been put off the Edmundo by everyone saying that it's little brother was superior.

Is the blend very different bewtween the Monte 2 and the Edmundo? They are very similar sizes and was wondering if torcedores got the same batch of tobacco but just made them into different shapes?

I always found the Edmundo a bit lighter than the No2. The general answer is that the blend will be the same through out the range, but the different sizes produce a different smoking experience. I suppose I'm lucky, 'cause I love 'em both!

Thank you Jimmy for a review on a fine Monty 2 that you love and enjoy .
As for me, I've never been a big Monty Fan but I do smoke the Piramid shape.
My fav is the H.Upmann No. 2 which I find simply wounderful in it's flavour profile,
Rich, bold and well balenced, always a pleasure.

I guess the important thing is to enjoy what you smoke.

As far as I can see the Upmann No2 is still in production. It is not mentioned on any of the D-lists in circulation. You can check out the discontinued UK cigar list on this site here. I'm not a massive fan of the cigar personally, but I would be very surprised to see this one go
